Brace yourselves for some soapification! ping pong split screen, the new participatory series by irreality.tv and Simon Oberhammer, will take place in the public space around brut nordwest. A mobile architecture made of bike trailers will unfold like ping-pong tables, where performer Otmar Wagner will invite you to play. But there is so much more that could happen here. The tabletop can become a film set, a dining table, a venue for half-fictional, half-real stories developed and staged on camera with the people in the neighbourhood. And as usual with irreality.tv, whoever wants to join can join.
Performance artist Otmar Wagner is fed up with art. Instead, he shows up around brut nordwest with some mobile architecture that can be a table tennis board among many other things and challenges people to play ping-pong with him. This is the setting for the new series by irreality.tv & Simon Oberhammer. As usual with irreality.tv, whoever wants to be part of the whole thing is happy to join. And, say, build table-tennis paddles based on famous artworks. Or turn the board into a dining table. Or fall in love while playing ping-pong. What happens exactly will depend on what the participants want. The ping-pong table may turn into a film set, a shooting location for stories that are half-fictional, half-real. At the same time, ping pong split screen is an intervention in the urban space and a fictional series, documenting and cinematically mapping a process, the venues, and not least the protagonists’ hopes and desires. Two shooting periods in May and June will be followed by the series’ gala premiere at brut nordwest in October, needless to say with a red carpet and the whole shebang.
irreality.tv is a platform for site-specific, amateur TV projects. Its series are created in collaboration with people on location; everybody is welcome to join and work on the plot with irreality.tv. Projects are centred around the question: What should or could happen if life was a TV show? And sometimes it is – while filming, that is: a method described by irreality.tv as soapification.
Simon Oberhammer is an architect and sometimes set designer. For the irreality.tv series NIGHTWATCH he designed a secret sleeping architecture, for EXIT GHOST a congress centre populated by ghosts.
Otmar Wagner is a performance artist and amateur table tennis player, who has played important roles in former irreality.tv series, such as a resident of a guerrilla camp, the manager of Café Sandmann or a priest of paranormal phenomena.
