Workshops, performances and discourse formats on accessibility in the performing arts
accessible brut comprises a range of workshops, artistic works and debate formats on accessibility in dance and performance. It is the format's goal to make visible diverse intersectional perspectives and create new incentives and impulses considering disabled audiences and artists in artistic creative processes from their inception.

Therefore brut is continuously working on providing access and creating diverse and longlasting formats of accessibility – on, in front of and behind the stage. Your feedback is important to us! The series brut accessible deals with forms, aesthetics and conditions of accessibility in the performing arts. Workshops, performances and discourse formats are used to discuss the experiences of experts, try out alternative practices and create new stimuli and impulses. The experiences of people with disabilities are at the centre of this process. MORE
Tickets
For information and ticket reservations please contact us via +43 1 587 8774 or tickets@brut-wien.at. The ticket office is available Monday to Thursday from 10:00 to 16:00, Friday from 10:00 to 14:00 and two hours before the start of each performance. The box office opens 30 minutes before the start of each show.
Due to the often limited seating capacity, we recommend purchasing tickets in advance online via our webshop. The exception to this is Nestervals Nibelungen: Donaugold by Nesterval – tickets for wheelchair users are only available by emailing barrierefreiheit@brut-wien.at.
Tickets for accompanying persons
People who help individuals with visible and invisible disabilities or chronic illnesses in participating in social or public life are called accompanying persons. At brut, accompanying or assisting persons receive free admission to all events. Tickets can be purchased directly in the webshop or reserved by email at barrierefreiheit@brut-wien.at. The exception to this is Nestervals Nibelungen: Donaugold by Nesterval – tickets for accompanying persons are only available by emailing barrierefreiheit@brut-wien.at. We kindly ask you to bring your disability pass with you.
Assistance dogs
Assistance dogs are allowed in all relevant areas and rooms. We would be pleased if you register them in advance at barrierefreiheit@brut-wien.at. Assistance dogs include guide dogs, service dogs and signalling dogs.
Seating
Our events take place with free seating. If you require a specific seat, please send us an email to barrierefreiheit@brut-wien.at with information about which seats would be ideal for you, or contact one of our employees on the evening of the performance. To make arrangements in advance, please contact us by email at barrierefreiheit@brut-wien.at or by phone at +43 1 587 8774.
Content notes
If necessary, you will find a paragraph on so-called ‘Content notes’ under ‘Dates & Tickets’ directly on the page of the productions. There you will find notes on sensitive topics and the use of theatre effects such as haze or strobe lighting.
As many performances are world premieres, we ask for your understanding if this information is added at a later date. We will do our best to inform you as early as possible.

Audio flyer
An audio flyer is a flyer to listen to – the audio version of a programme or information flyer. In short audio files, one or several speakers convey the essential information about an event or a project. This includes, for example, a description of the event, details about place and time, as well as ticket information. The spoken text is often accompanied by atmospheric sound elements. Audio flyers are a barrier-free form of providing information and are particularly important for blind and visually impaired people. The musical intro to our audio flyers is by musician B.Visible, and the song is called Pancakes.
Pick-up service
To ensure that everyone can find their way to brut nordwest, we offer a pick-up service for selected events. Information about the meeting point and time can be found directly at the events under ‘Accessibility’.
Access friends
Access friends accompany events at brut and support visitors with access needs. They offer practical assistance and orientation, provide information about schedules and procedures, help with navigating the spaces and finding quiet or retreat areas, and are available as contact persons throughout the event. Access friends at brut can be recognised by their safety vests and bells.
Tactile guidance system
Tactile guidance systems are elements fixed to the floor that enable visually impaired or blind people to find their way around public spaces, both indoors and outdoors. Paths can be felt and perceived acoustically with the aid of a cane. Tactile guidance systems can consist of different shapes and materials.
A temporary guidance system consisting of rope and tape, which can be flexibly removed and reattached, is currently integrated at individual events at brut nordwest. The aim is to create a barrier-free environment in order to avoid accidents and offer greater safety.
Sensory Regulation Space
The Sensory Regulation Space is a retreat area for visitors who wish to regulate their senses and manage sensory input. The space offers tactile tools for stimulation and is equipped with various stim toys and other playful elements. Visitors can use the space to relax, reduce stress, and restore their focus. The room is always accessible and supports well-being and participation throughout the event.
Quiet Space
The Quiet Space is a space for visitors who wish to regulate their sensory input, enjoy a moment of calm, or temporarily step away from the activity at the event. The room is darkened and offers alternative seating and lying options, as well as tools such as eye masks and headphones. The space is always accessible and supports well-being and participation throughout the event.
Touch tours
A touch tour is an alternative to oral introductions. This usually takes place before the performance and focuses on touch. Touch tours allow visitors to approach the stage, costumes and props by touch and explore them intensively. Visitors can also get in touch with performers and receive a wide range of contextual information about the piece. Touch tours are aimed at people with and without disabilities.
Early boarding
‘Early boarding’ is a term that originally comes from air travel. With early boarding, brut offers visitors earlier admission to the respective venue. This makes it possible to find a seat, go to the toilet, get a glass of water and get used to the room and lighting situation in a relaxed manner before the official start.
The offer is aimed at people with visible and invisible disabilities, but can be used by all visitors.
The possibility of early boarding is announced on the website under the respective events. The duration of early boarding depends on the event format.

Relaxed performance
Relaxed performance is an accessibility concept that rethinks the conventional setting of performance spaces. It originates from the autism community and aims to make sensory stimuli in theatre and performance more accessible. Light and sound concepts are artistically developed in such a way that they are as low-stimulus as possible, thus enabling a more inclusive performance experience. Alternative seating options, leaving the room during the performance, and sounds from the audience are not considered taboo in the context of relaxed performance, but rather an integral part of the shared experience.
Stim toys
Stim toys (short for stimulation toys) are small objects that provide tactile, visual, or auditory input to support self-regulation. They can help reduce stress, improve concentration, and balance sensory over- or under-stimulation. Stim toys are often used by neurodivergent or neuroqueer individuals but can be helpful for anyone. Examples of stim toys include magnets, stress or kneading balls, and small cubes or rings.
Audio description
Audio description at brut Wien refers to the oral description of the experience of theatre, dance and performances. It can serve as a mere description of stage events and also convey the sensual and atmospheric experience of the play. There are various forms of audio description: the description can be transmitted via headphones or spoken by a person positioned in the stage setting or audience area. Audio description can take place live or be played back.
Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS)
Austrian Sign Language is an independent language with its own linguistic system, based on hand signs, facial expressions, and body posture. Just like spoken languages, ÖGS has regional variations and dialects. For deaf and hard of hearing people, it is not only a means of communication but also essential for equal participation in everyday life. Since 2005, ÖGS has been officially recognised as a language in the Austrian Federal Constitution.
Surtitles
Surtitles are textual overlays during the performance that can be used in different ways: On the one hand, surtitles can indicate a translation of the spoken text into another language, on the other hand, they can serve as a means of participation for deaf audiences. Supertitles have a certain font size and are played at a certain tempo.
Soft get-out
With ‘soft get-out’, brut offers visitors the opportunity to take enough time after the official end of the programme to say goodbye, clarify any unanswered questions and leave the space in peace.
The offer is aimed at people with visible and invisible disabilities, but can be used by all visitors.
The soft get-out option is announced on the website under the respective event. The duration of the soft get-out depends on the event format.

Parking
As the building cannot offer its own accessible parking spaces, we recommend using the nearest parking spaces indicated on the website of the City of Vienna (approx. 300 to 700 metres away). The courtyard of brut nordwest can be used for short periods by prior arrangement and subject to availability at barrierefreiheit@brut-wien.at or +43 1 587 8774.
Approach tram
Tram 5
The nearest accessible stop of tram 5 is ‘Nordwestbahnstraße’. Please note: 2 stops before this in the direction of Westbahnhof there is the similarly sounding stop ‘Nordbahnstraße’. As this is not it yet, wait for two more stations to get off! From the stop ‘Nordbahnstraße’, a level path leads about 130 metres to brut nordwest. The inner courtyard is asphalted and without any rough bumps.
Tram 2
The accessible stop of tram 2 ‘Am Tabor’ is a little further away (about 1 kilometre) from brut nordwest. Attention: 2 stops before that in the direction of Friedrich-Engels-Platz there is the similarly sounding stop ‘Taborstraße’. As this is not it yet, wait for two more stations to get off!

Bar
There is an open-air courtyard in front of brut, which is equipped with benches, tables and lighting and can be used by visitors before and after the performance. The bar is on the left and the entrance is on the right. The bar is at ground level and accessible without steps. There are two fridges on the floor and you can help yourself. There is an open box with change on a table between the two fridges. Please put the money for sodas, beer and other bottled drinks in this box. If you need help buying a drink, please contact our evening staff. Each event is supervised by members of our team half an hour before the start. You will recognize us by our blue jackets with the yellow brut logo – please ask us for assistance.
Box office and wardrobe
The box office is located right at the entrance on the left and is staffed 30 minutes before the performance. The wardrobe is located right at the entrance to the hall on the right, the staff can accept jackets and backpacks directly. The wardrobe opens 30 minutes before the performance.
Grey Space
The grey space is accessible at ground level. The path from the courtyard into the hall is approx. 15 metres. The room is usually used as a foyer and opens about 30 minutes before the performance; there are seating areas and a wardrobe. A black box with a stand is set up in the centre of the room.
Screens
Please note that there are screens in the entrance area and in the Grey Space that sometimes display fast-moving images.
Accessible toilet
An accessible toilet (entrance door approx. 1.5 metres wide, sufficient turning space and grab rails) is available on the ground floor and is accessible without steps.

Approach by car & parking
There are a number of public car parks around the WUK, for which a parking ticket is required. A disabled car park is located behind the WUK in Wilhelm-Exner-Gasse 5.
Box office
The box office is located at the main entrance of the WUK at Währinger Straße 59 and is at ground level. The event rooms of the WUK can be reached via the inner courtyard.
WUK Großer Saal
The great hall at WUK can be reached via Währinger Straße 59 and Severingasse 12. The hall is a black box, a large room with black walls. The hall and the adjoining foyer are accessible at ground level. There is a large, illuminated bar in the foyer. The foyer opens one hour before the performance. The cloakrooms are located on the 1st floor and are not accessible via the main auditorium. A barrier-free WC is available on the ground floor and is accessible without steps.
WUK Projektraum
The WUK’s Projektraum is a bright room with white walls. The quickest way to reach the project room is via Severingasse 12. The main entrance can be reached via a staircase. Next to the main entrance, a glass door at ground level leads to the lift, which provides barrier-free access to the room via a side door. A barrier-free WC is located on the same floor as the project room.
Der Betrieb
Vogelweidplatz 13, 1150 Vienna
The location is barrier-free and step-free. However, there is no accessible toilet.

studio brut
Zieglergasse 25, 1070 Vienna
studio brut is located at Zieglergasse in the rear courtyard of building 25, on the right-hand side, and is not accessible: the theatre space is only accessible by stairs downwards, once into the foyer and once into the stage area, each with around 15 steps. The staircase is narrow and the steps are steep. No elevator and no accessible toilet available. Please note that there are screens in the entrance area that sometimes display fast-moving images.
U3 Stop: ‘Zieglergasse’

brut nordwest – Rehearsal spaces
Nordwestbahnstraße 8–10, 1200 Vienna
The rehearsal spaces at brut nordwest are open to the public for smaller formats such as showings, rehearsal insights, workshops and seminars. The rehearsal spaces are located on the first floor and can only be reached via the stairs (23 steps, approx. 2 metres wide). There is no elevator available. Accessible toilet on the ground floor.

Public transport in Vienna
Almost all public transport in Vienna is barrier-free. There is barrier-free access, such as lifts or ramps, at every station. In most stations, floor guide strips help blind and visually impaired people to find their way to stairs, escalators and lifts. We recommend using the ‘WienMobil’ app, which provides real-time information. It not only shows which means of transport are accessible, but also provides information about current lift breakdowns at stations. You can also select in the settings under ‘Mobility’ that only barrier-free departures and routes are displayed.
