AWOL (“Absent Without Leave”) explores synergies between humans and nature’s mystical creatures and the significance of sensuality on an analogue, spiritual and virtual scale. Coproduced by brut and Tanzhaus Zürich, Malika Fankha created 3 music videos for AWOL that take us into a world of elves, trolls and other hybrid beings who challenge our thinking in stereotypes and duality due to their queer, volatile essence. The first video of the series, KARMA, will be presented in the course of imagetanz 2021 on March 17th. The other two videos, LAVA and ODE, will be published as part of the Tanzhaus Zürich programme on April 30th.
Malika Fankha studied theatre in Zurich and contemporary dance in Salzburg (SEAD) and at NYU (Tisch School of Performing Arts). She works internationally as a dancer, sound poet and DJ with artists such as Maureen Kägi, Valerie Reding, Tino Sehgal, Superamas and Deborah Hazler. Her own work has been created in collaboration with Tanzhaus Zürich, brut Wien, WUK, tanzquartier, ImPulsTanz, Wiener Festwochen, Dampfzentrale Bern, Art Basel, Zentrum Paul Klee, workspacebrussels, kunstencentrum BUDA, Cullberg-Ballet Stockholm, life long burning, Golden Days Festival Copenhagen and Mladi Levi Festival Ljublijana. Her performance Oxy Moron. A Cyborg Utopia was featured at imagetanz 2020.
