{Work in progress} {Question & Answer} {Female Gaze & Voice}

Two times Two makes four completely different positions: A cross-section of Vienna’s young performance scene is presented in two parts at the Huggy Bears Art Place in context of imagetanz 2021. In Part 1 of this special edition of the brut series Handle with care, the audience gets exclusive insights into two projects in their respective development phases. In the Questionnaire Series, Laura Stoll examines how medical questionnaires determine which people are sick or healthy. In The first image was the outline of a shadow, the collective PUC examines the relationship between poetry and physical expression through the lens of Female Gaze.

Laura Stoll – Questionnaire Series

(in English and German)

Question and answer. The medical method treads the fine line between quantification and qualitative survey; every interaction follows an unwritten dramaturgy. In psychiatry, standardized questionnaires are used to make a distinction between normal and pathological: information, simplification, conclusion.

The Questionnaire Series is an examination of the methods for measuring people and an experiment in the tension between the questioner and the respondent.

Laura Stoll, born 1990 in Innsbruck, studied medicine at the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin with a focus on psychiatry and cognitive neuroscience as well as philosophy at the Humboldt University Berlin with a focus on analytical philosophy. She is currently a student at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in the Art & Science Department. She works artistically in the fields of media art, sculpture, installation and performance.

PUC – The first image was the outline of a shadow

in English

The first image was the outline of a shadow is an excerpt of PUC’s year-long research project that circulates around the concept of subjectivity and the autonomy/dependency/inter-dependency it stimulates when being expressed publicly. The piece unfolds around an utterance of the female gaze (voice), the pre and post-condition of such an act. Here PUC works with a text of the controversial Iranian female poet Forough Farrokhzad and the potentiality of a non-verbal, spatial assertion of the body as an equal non-representative partner of the linguistic expression.

PUC collective was founded in 2017 by the artists Anna Possarnig and Maria Shurkhal in collaboration with composer Amir A. Ahmadi. Since its debut piece Bauhaus Tanzt (I.) – which focused on the alliance of contemporary music, dance, and design – PUC became a platform for transmitting/communicating/presenting interdisciplinary art. The company is based in Vienna, Austria, and functions under Verein Studio Fugu. (Season 2020/21)

-------------

HUGGY BEARS is a support plattform by artists for artists founded by Superamas. It provides mentoring in various fields for emerging artists to help professionalize their work. The selected upcoming artists recieve a yearlong support that offers studio space as often as needed, workshops, artistic and administrative support, networking, public showing, sharing and eventually presenting under professional conditions. As part of the brut series Handle with care the currently supported artists give the audience a sample of their works eventually premiering in WUK in Autumn 2021 under professional conditions.

The Handle with Care series grants sneak peeks into processes of artistic creation, experimenting with new formats and creating spaces for talking and the exchanging of views. Artists get the chance to try out parts of their work in front of a small audience, to receive feedback and to turn spectators into accomplices.
