To think of the city as a story allows us to reflect upon the various narratives that each of its elements convey. Everyday life is written and rewritten by the city’s inhabitants, urban planners, governmental institutions, weather conditions, traffic, animals, etc. Like every story needs pauses for a reader to reflect on the unfolding narrative, a city needs blank places constrained from urban programming. Places which stay undecided, undefined and always in becoming. Open to new narratives, granting a space for imagination, uncertainty and immediacy. Allowing the city to breathe between the defined and the undefined.

THIS PLACE IS INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK is a poetic gesture, contributing to the belief that vacant lots are essential conditions for a diverse, vibrant and democratic city culture – and not only means for capital investment and city growth. By labelling an urban void as an “intentional blank place” Robles and Mouritzen wish to accentuate the unavoidable correlation between poetic possibilities, strategic planning and capital interests.

Lasse Mouritzen, Danish artist and curator based in Copenhagen, his practice focuses on public space and urbanisation. Frida Robles, Mexican artist and curator based in Vienna, she focuses on the intersection between performativity, space and visual arts.

Looks like it has begun V – Center for the independent theater, dance and performance scene

On Monday, April 19, the new brut nordwest venue and the planned center for the independent theater, dance and performance scene were presented to the media by Executive City Councillor for Cultural Affairs and Science Veronica Kaup-Hasler and brut director Kira Kirsch – due to covid-19 in a small group of persons. We collect videos and media reactions to the appointment here – enjoy reading!
Let's talk about brut brut nordwest

Looks like it has begun IV – So much space!

In brut nordwest everything is united under one roof: colleagues and artists can meet again in one place, exchange ideas and participate in the development of the projects together. In addition to event and rehearsal areas, there is also enough space for the administration offices, the technology warehouse and lounge areas for employees and artists in the Nordwestbahnstraße. The new edition of "Looks like it has begun" takes a look at the areas on the sideline of the big stage.
