Open Call: In the Field

A festival excursion with brut Wien and the Wiener Festwochen

22.02.2019 - 31.03.2019

Wiener Festwochen

In the Field is a format that is directed primarily at students and artists starting out in their profession and invites them to experience a theatre festival at first hand.

In the immediate run-up to the Wiener Festwochen and during the five-week run, participants will get behind-the-scenes insight into the festival and have the opportunity to visit performances and rehearsals, talk to artists and experts and discuss their impressions with the other members of the group.

The Wiener Festwochen open a space for multidisciplinary creation – international while anchored in the city. brut Wien is an important institution for co-productions in the independent local scene and places particular emphasis on site-specific projects. Together these two cultural institutions will take a small group of interested people on a festival excursion. The goal is to get to know production processes, to interact with artistic projects and to establish interconnections between international and local positions. To this end, in addition to the team of brut Wien and the Wiener Festwochen, Viennese artists will join the regular meetings.

Those artistic projects in the programme of the Wiener Festwochen that take place outside conventional theatre spaces, that are site-specific or participatory, provide a focus and a point of departure for joint reflection. Which strategies and performative practices do contemporary productions use to overcome the divide between the stage and the auditorium, to activate the audience, to explore new spaces or find new perspectives for the old ones?
