How can stage art be created when the audience is thought of as diverse? The four-day workshop Dramaturgy Blind Inclusive by Fia Neises and Liv Schellander is aimed at interested parties and artists of all visual abilities. It offers plenty of time and space to get to grips with creative audio description and to research inclusive formats. Finally, there will be a public moment in which the participants can present the designs they have developed.

In addition, part of the workshop will be dedicated to the topic of accessibility and anti-ableist measures in dance and theatre for visually impaired and blind people. This can be attended separately.

Fia Neises – With Or Without You

Audio description is a way of making the visual accessible to blind and visually impaired people. The stage action is described vocally from the perspective of a sighted person. However, in order to create an inclusive experience of dance and performance, it is essential to consider the perceptual style of visually impaired and blind people in artistic processes.

In Dramaturgy Blind Inclusive, Fia Neises and Liv Schellander pose the question of how stage art can be created when the audience is thought of as diverse: The workshop leaders, who have diverse experience and expertise with artistic accessibility, will teach participants methods and strategies using examples from their own work practice. The focus will be on the extent to which audio description can be used to develop a multi-sensory theatre experience. In addition to theoretical input, the workshop offers enough space for guided practical experimentation, failure and new beginnings.

Dramaturgy Blind Inclusive is an offer for anyone interested in gaining basic theoretical and practical knowledge about audio description. After participating in the workshop, this knowledge can be applied in your own artistic works and work contexts. Participation is certified.

Fia/Sophia Neises is a freelance performer, choreographer, access dramaturge, theatre educator and disability-rights activist. In her artistic research, she has focussed for almost ten years now on aesthetic accessibility for blind audiences. In 2023, she was honoured for extraordinary developments in dance as part of the German Dance Award for her activist work in favour of more inclusion. She identifies as a disabled artist and proposes that people’s individual styles of perception should be valued and unconditional access to art should be provided already during the creation process.

Liv Schellander is a dancer/performer, choreographer, Somatic Experiencing (SE)® practitioner and facilitator. She collaborates with artists in various constellations, teaches and produces her own creations. More recently, she has been increasingly exploring multi-sensorial art creation in the performing arts. Since 2022 she has been collaborating with Michael Turinsky, and in 2023 co-created the dance performance With Or Without You with Fia/Sophia Neises, which shares spaces of access intimacy. Since 2023, Schellander has been developing her practice of ‘Choreo-Constellating’, which is artistically explored and implemented as part of various projects. Her collaborative project Animalariums’ Constellations was selected for Perform Europe 2025. www.livschellander.com
