Accompanied by a sentimental darkness, Nyxxx proposes an erotic dance for the night of the present day. Lau Lukkarila is inspired by the fierce character of Nyx, the Greek goddess of the Night, an allegory for the erotic. Clandestine dances, light, electronic music and video compose a post-romantic nightfall that brings on stage sentimental choreographies and absurd live acts, all contributing to an atmosphere of a slightly scary arousal.
Lau Lukkarila investigates the erotic through lived experience, movement qualities and the idea of the emotional body. They emphasise the aspect of feeling in the doing, beyond the mere act of doing itself. In a world of post-xxx, what the heck does it mean to become an engineer of one’s own desires? What has happened to catharsis? Does erotic still have a chance?
Lau Lukkarila is a choreographer and performer currently based in Vienna. They studied applied theatre, acting, contemporary dance, voice and performance at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (Helsinki) and the Royal School of Performing Arts (Madrid). In 2018 they received the Austrian Federal Chancellor’s Office’s START scholarship for music and performing arts as well as the danceWEB Scholarship at ImPulsTanz Festival. In 2019 they performed the solo work Trouble at Rakete Festival at Tanzquartier Wien. In 2020-2020 Lau is part of Freischwimmen, an international production platform for performance and theatre.
"Energy and emotionality, body control and muscle play and graceful and rough movements of the arms and legs actually make her appear as a goddess – dangerous, seductive and irresistible. With stage presence and expressiveness, the artist has a perfectly timed, perfectly thought-out, captivating performance in stringent dramaturgy, designed with smooth transitions, sparingly used video images, harmonious light changes and suitable, sometimes intoxicating music that arouses desire and hope for more."
