Looks like it has begun II – Stage clear at brut nordwest
Work continues in brut nordwest. brut has performed at 90 venues in 19 Viennese districts over the past few years - some of them in places completely unfamiliar to the theatre, such as on the lakeside of Seestadt Aspern or in the huge laundrette of the Matteottihof in the 5th district. The many experiences in adapting new theatrical locations are now benefiting us! And yet it is something quite new to transform a former factory hall into a theatre venue for several years. . . .
The hall on the Nordwestbahnstraße offers an enormous amount of space. When the stage floor was laid in January 2021, it was possible for the first time to estimate the dimensions of brut northwest. The stage (14 m x 12 m) alone offers 168 m2 of space and the total size of the black box is 25 m x 15 m, which is a lot more than the entire hall in the Künstlerhaus (18 m x 13 m). In total, the old industrial hall offers an event area of approx. 1,350 m2.
The Blackbox may seem like the most obvious place to realise artistic projects, but those familiar with the brut program know that the stage space is often completely rethought and expanded. And we have already prepared for this. Since the basic scenarios of the playing have to be approved by the authorities, it was already sketched out in advance where next to the blackbox in the remaining large area of the hall e. g. readings or performances with loose seating may take place. Countless questions need to be clarified: Which lines of view arise? How far is the nearest emergency exit? Where does the entrance take place? The plans of the different stage scenarios currently cover an entire wall, in addition to floor plans, 3D renderings of the stage space and other plans in which brut nordwest, at least in theory, is already finished.
The laying of the stage floor was a special moment: at last you saw the area where performance, dance and theatre will take place soon! The transformation became really clear when the scaffolding for headlights and loudspeakers was installed. With the three-dimensional space created, brut nordwest had once again come a step closer to its future as a theatre. But for the blackbox to earn its name, it still needs a lot of black moltons and a grandstand for the audience. More about this in the next issue of “Looks like it has begun”
