La notte è il mio giorno preferito deals with our relationship to the ‘Other’ in a meditation about animals and the eco-system in which they live. Imagine the animals and the plants, the organic and the inorganic, melting into one in the dark of a nocturnal forest. Landslides and screams disrupt the silence, signals and mysterious perceptive organs inspired by various species keep everything together. Here we are in a forest that is neither unspolied nor idealised, in a forest that technonaturally includes the traces of its dwellers and leaves its mark on them.
Annamaria Ajmone’s dance performance is guided by the practice of philosophical tracing as described by French author Baptiste Morizot in his essay Sur la piste animale (‘On the Animal Trail’): By trying to follow the traces of wild animals we can assume their perspective, understand their possible actions, following the ontological position of perspectivism as phrased by anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro. The title La notte è il mio giorno preferito (‘Night is My Favourite Day’) is taken from a letter written by American poet Emily Dickinson (1830–1886) and refers to darkness as the space of an absent presence in the animal kingdom – a place of intuition.
Annamaria Ajmone is an Italian dancer and choreographer who holds a degree in contemporary literature. Her works have been presented at numerous festivals, in museums and galleries across the world, such as Santarcangelo Festival, La Biennale Danza (IT), Public Fiction/Night Gallery (USA), Palais de Tokyo (FR). In 2015, she received the Danza&Danza Award. Together with Sara Leghissa she coordinates Nobody’s Indiscipline, an open source platform for art practices, and Nessuno, a practice of gathering and celebrating with a focus on performance, dance, visual art, and discourse experiments. Annamaria Ajmone is an associated artist of Triennale Milano Teatro.
