In March, imagetanz Festival is back at brut, with a diverse, three weeks long program presenting new artistic works in choreography and performance! Many exciting premieres and cooperations with local artists, outstanding international guest performances and an outreach program with studio visists, discussions, warm-ups and regulars' table is awaiting the audience! The artists invited this year propose alternative ties with the past and alternative strategies of staging it.

This year’s edition of the festival traces a remarkable trend in contemporary dance: Choreographers – and in particular the younger generations – are “looking back”. This general trend to turn “back” is mostly perceived in the way of personal history, dance history or just history.
And yet, since 1989, imagetanz has dedicated itself to presenting new positions in the field of choreography art and thus to the embodiment of the New, usually expressed with a clear cut with traditions, a certain canon or even a previous generation.
The artists invited this year propose alternative ties with the past and alternative strategies of staging it. What unites those different artworks, however, is a tendency to look at the past as something we desire from a present point of view. As objet trouvé, the past has the potential to return interminably and this emphasises the problematic quality of our time. It bulimically devours our past (as well as our future) until it becomes a never-ending present.
With this background, the opening night of the festival presents a journey through the history of imagetanz and its renowned protagonists. The Inheritance tries to create a visible link between the past and a potential future, passing on a possible testament to a new generation.
The heart of the festival is of course still dedicated to new choreographic approaches. The Vienna-based artists Andrea Gunnlaugsdóttir and Sööt/Zeyringer, whose works have both been presented last year as part of the Handle with Care Special series, analyse ancestral issues, nature and obstacles. The duo Man/Majce, visual artists from Vienna engaged in choreography for the first time, reread the myth of Echo and Narcissus as an impossible encounter of pure identity and pure otherness. Claire Lefévre and Evandro Pedroni work on a choreographic score without memory developed live on stage.
In addition, the Italian group Dewey Dell stage their research on the physical residue of the movements of prehistoric man, while Mårten Spångberg puts on stage an epically monumental statement about the strength and beauty of the present, the past in his case being a playlist for recurring dance scores that already start to vanish in the moment they appear.
The focus on collectivity and processes, central for last year’s edition of the festival, continues to represent an important focus. All the formats initiated in 2016 return. There are studio visits as part of the Handle with Care Special series, this time featuring Alex Bailey and Laura Meuris & Pawel Dudus, there are dinner dates with the regulars’ table Bring your own booze, there will be souper@brut and some of the artists will again host the Almost Yoga warm-up sessions leading up to their performances.
This year’s festival is a rich, exciting three-week journey between the past and the future. You are welcome to join … and you are WELCOME BACK!
