Staged photograph of a large ensemble performance under intense blue-white backlighting. Through a rough opening broken into a stone wall, a coastal landscape can be seen, with sea, rocks and pale buildings in the distance. In the foreground on the left stands a female-presenting figure in a blue-and-white striped dress, while on the right a second figure is seen from behind holding a tablet or digital device. The room feels like a ruin, while outside there is an almost artificially beautiful view. The scene combines decay, observation and a virtual or staged landscape.

Out of control

An abandoned, circular stairwell with a curved staircase is completely filled with sand. The sand covers the steps and forms small dunes throughout the space. Tall windows reveal the dark evening outside, while a single ceiling light casts a warm glow. Peeling walls and railings enhance the quiet, surreal atmosphere.

From 05 to 30 May (previews on 28, 29 & 30 April), DARUM (Victoria Halper & Kai Krösche) will present at brut nordwest their second virtual reality production Auflösung (Dissolution). On this journey, the audience is immersed in a decaying architecture and will experience, what it means to feel vulnerable and in need of a helping hand.

It’s time to say goodbye

Several people are crossing a wide street junction on a zebra crossing. In the center, one person carries a large white sign with handwritten black letters reading “THE END IS NEAR.” Cars drive in the background, tram tracks cut through the street, and multi-storey buildings line the scene. Some people wear winter jackets and face masks.

From 10 to 12 June (19:00–22:00), Karin Pauer & Aldo Giannotti will celebrate the end of brut Wien’s final season at brut nordwest with their durational performance FOR NOW. In this site-specific project based on the creation of a mural, the audience is invited to witness the transformation of the venue and to collectively bid farewell to the location. Free admission!

Last chance on stage

A group portrait of six people on a stage, staged like a show finale. The subjects are wearing eye-catching costumes, make-up and wigs in bold colours, including glitter, lace and a bright green, elaborately styled hairstyle. Some are kneeling or sitting in the foreground, while others stand behind them. The poses are confident, playful and expressive. Violet stage lighting enhances the theatrical, queer aesthetic of the scene. The photograph is duplicated and mirrored.

To say goodbye to brut nordwest and to Kira Kirsch as artistic director, the Hamburg-based collective Queereeoké is throwing an exuberant karaoke party on 12 June. From 22:00, the stage is yours for big farewell songs and spontaneous choreographies. Admission is free!

OPEN CALL 2026/2027 of Academy of Unlearning of kulturen in bewegung

The Academy of Unlearning is a 9-month mentoring programme for migrant and BIPoC women interested in cultural education and outreach who want to bring their own perspectives into the arts and cultural sector. In exchange with cultural educators from various institutions, participants question established patterns of knowledge and thought, get to know new approaches to cultural mediation and create spaces for diversity, participation and collective (un)learning. Veza Fernández invited to the Impulse Festival

The jury of the Impulse Festival has selected ten outstanding productions from over 500 entries for the 2026 showcase in Düsseldorf, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Cologne and Bochum. Among them is the brut co-production Chantal, the body is a text longing for perspective by Veza Fernández. Congratulations!
