New Art
on Stage
Staged photograph of a large ensemble performance under intense blue-white backlighting. Several performers move directly towards a low black platform at the centre of the image, its surface scattered with white material. The costumes combine black, white and a few bold colours; skirts, corsets, shirts and short trousers create a deliberately theatrical, slightly excessive look. Audience members sit close to the playing area on both sides, many wearing dark headphones or headsets. The atmosphere feels loud, festive and heightened.

Through a rough opening broken into a stone wall, a coastal landscape can be seen, with sea, rocks and pale buildings in the distance. In the foreground on the left stands a female-presenting figure in a blue-and-white striped dress, while on the right a second figure is seen from behind holding a tablet or digital device. The room feels like a ruin, while outside there is an almost artificially beautiful view. The scene combines decay, observation and a virtual or staged landscape.

Out of control

In a bright room with wooden flooring and white walls, a person stands in the foreground wearing a VR headset and large headphones. They are dressed in a dark knitted cardigan and jeans and hold two controllers. Further back, a second person with similar equipment moves through the space. Black curtains cover the windows, while blue markings on the walls and white lines on the floor define the performance area.

Until 30 May, DARUM (Victoria Halper & Kai Krösche) are presenting their second virtual reality production, Auflösung, at brut nordwest. On this journey, the audience is immersed in crumbling architecture and experiences what it means to be vulnerable and in need of a helping hand. If there are any remaining tickets, we will announce this at short notice on Instagram.

It’s time to say goodbye

Several people are crossing a wide street junction on a zebra crossing. In the center, one person carries a large white sign with handwritten black letters reading “THE END IS NEAR.” Cars drive in the background, tram tracks cut through the street, and multi-storey buildings line the scene. Some people wear winter jackets and face masks.

From 10 to 12 June (19:00–22:00), Karin Pauer & Aldo Giannotti will celebrate the end of brut Wien’s final season at brut nordwest with their durational performance FOR NOW. In this site-specific project based on the creation of a mural, the audience is invited to witness the transformation of the venue and to collectively bid farewell to the location. Free admission!

Last chance on stage

A group portrait of six people on a stage, staged like a show finale. The subjects are wearing eye-catching costumes, make-up and wigs in bold colours, including glitter, lace and a bright green, elaborately styled hairstyle. Some are kneeling or sitting in the foreground, while others stand behind them. The poses are confident, playful and expressive. Violet stage lighting enhances the theatrical, queer aesthetic of the scene. The photograph is duplicated and mirrored.

To say goodbye to brut nordwest and to Kira Kirsch as artistic director, the Hamburg-based collective Queereeoké is throwing an exuberant karaoke party on 12 June. From 22:00, the stage is yours for big farewell songs and spontaneous choreographies. Admission is free!

Two people stand in an entrance or stairwell area, looking up at the camera from below. A white sign with the brut logo hangs on the wall to the left. The overhead perspective emphasises the grey concrete floor, a metal plate on the ground and the plain architecture of the space.

Farewell words by Kira Kirsch & Flori Gugger

After eleven years, Kira Kirsch and Flori Gugger bid farewell to brut Wien – looking back on a time of departures, detours and movement: from Künstlerhaus out into the city, across more than one hundred venues and all the way to the temporary home of brut nordwest. A personal farewell text about places that disappear, a team that made so much possible, artists who were willing to take risks, and an institution that learned to feel at home in change.
Several performers dance against a black background and white stage haze under intense backlight. At the centre, one person in a dark, shiny top raises both arms and looks straight ahead. On the left and right, other bodies and lifted arms are partially cut off by the frame. The atmosphere feels powerful, club-like and shaped by strong contrasts of light.

Farewell messages from artists

To mark the farewell to brut nordwest, artists and companions have gathered personal messages, memories and thoughts. The result is a many-voiced farewell round – affectionate, witty, wistful and full of gratitude for shared years, shared spaces and unforgettable moments.
Three performers in a wide, empty hall form a sculptural, low pose together. Two people are dressed in flowing black fabric, while the person in the centre wears a pale white outfit with voluminous sleeves. On the left, a harp stands in front of an intense warm light source that makes haze or mist visible. The room feels open, cool and minimal.

A personal look back by Ditta Rudle

A house lost, but not its courage: in her look back, Ditta Rudle traces brut Wien’s nomadic years – from 2017 to 2021, from its eviction from Künstlerhaus to more than ninety venues across the city. A text about wandering, inventiveness, unlikely stages, artists who rethink spaces, and an audience that followed brut all over Vienna.
