Welcome to 1030!

There is a building. Still empty. It stands in the 3rd district, waiting to become a place. It has its own history, still to be discovered. It has space for experiences and exchanges, still to be created. Together.

In the 2026/27 season at brut, we will be working intensively with the meanings and multilayered experiences of arrivals, displacements and different shades of transformation. In this season, having already left brut nordwest and not yet arrived at our new home, we embrace temporariness as a challenge that helps us think differently, develop new formats and remain open to ideas that may seem impossible, but are still worth trying. The programme will be multidisciplinary. It will be attentive to decolonial, queer and feminist perspectives, ecological justice, and artistic practices that question dominant narratives and imagine other ways of living together. We hope you will join us for this extensive and exciting series of explorations.

The season starts on 16 October, featuring works by Mzamo Nondlwana and Amanda Piña. The programme will be followed by performative interventions by Veza Fernández & Tony Wagner, Catol Teixeira & Chaos Clay, and Wojciech Grudziński, as well as DJ sets by Gawdesque, Seba Kayan, and DJ Keshi. This day is not only a season opening, but also an introduction to what you can expect in the coming months and to how we imagine this new season at brut: with the one-to-one format and a new space dedicated to this practice, studio brut as an important structure within the house, practice-based experiences, and a programme that creates spaces for encounters between the Viennese and international performing arts ecosystems.

The one-to-one format is crucial to the way we are thinking about this season of transformation and transition. We believe that the time we can spend together is the most valuable and generous thing we can provide and receive. So why not spend this time in an intimate experience – one in which the performative encounter is shared with one person at a time? In the 2026/27 season, we will be hosting One-to-one performances by Amanda Piña, Doris Uhlich, Alix Eynaudi, Zoë Gudović and Veza Fernández.

From spring 2027 onwards, we will gradually begin to introduce the new brut building through a series of soft openings. Rather than presenting a finished theatre, we want to reveal the building step by step, allowing its identity to emerge through encounters and artistic practice. As we begin opening the house, some things will still be taking shape – and this is exactly why we would love for you to be part of it. To see, to smell, to experience and to inhabit this space together, in a gentle, more fluid and slower way.

The 2026/27 season will also be about continuing long-standing collaborations, such as the one with Bears in the Park, an important platform supporting the development of emerging artists based in Vienna. It will be about discovering our new neighbourhood in the 3rd district. Together with Inge Gappmaier, Flóra Boros, Verena Herterich, Hannah Schillinger, Lau Lukkarila and Winona Hudec, we will connect with the neighbourhood in different ways by collaborating with Neuer Kunstverein Wien and Arena Wien. With Doris Uhlich and Adam Man, we will also explore other exciting spaces beyond the theatre. On top, the new season will offer more possibilities for artistic research in the frame of residencies. In this first round we will be hosting Bita Bell, Elisabeth Bakambamba Tambwe, Olivia Hild and Stina Fors.

Our wish for the future is to be able to welcome more international artists. In the season 2026/27, you will have the chance to see the first steps towards this, with the presence of Catol Teixeira and Wojciech Grudziński and through a collaboration with the Chilean collective Fundación Cuerpo Sur.

Further developing accessibility at brut remains central to how we think about and shape our engagement with audiences, artists, formats and brut’s identity, in close collaboration with experts by experience and communities. A sense of softness and approachability will guide the way we bring artists and audiences together throughout the season, also taking time to present works in different shapes and places, starting with a piece by Claire Lefèvre. Underlying all of this is a continued focus on creating a space for critical political discourse, for example, with performances by Myassa Kraitt and Malika Fankha.

We believe that at a time of wars, genocides, ecological crises, species extinction, economic injustice, exclusion and aggression towards minorities, when artistic freedom of expression is increasingly restricted in many countries, cultural institutions can remain spaces of freedom – places where we can share, think and learn from each other, and imagine a better and more equal future together. We would like to think that brut can be such a place.

A new building is never simply a building. It is a possibility. It can reproduce existing structures or it can become a space in which something different becomes possible.

There is a building. Still empty.
