What’s New in Choreography and Performance

By a diverse three-week programme this March, the imagetanz festival will present a variety of current takes on choreography and performance. Five premieres by local artists and two international guest performances will be completed by a multi-faceted outreach programme including twelve occasions on which festival artists invite the audience to join them for studio visits, workshops, talks and parties.
Thematically, this year’s imagetanz festival tackles “Reflections”. The projects all reflect various aspects of the present while also reflecting back into the past and venturing an outlook into the future. To do so, the imagetanz artists will adapt timeless classics for the Here and Now, reflect high-technology, digital realms and both their utopian and their dystopian potentials and engage with social conflict zones of the present.
There will be five premieres and co-productions by local artists: Together with a group of young adults, choreographers Magdalena Chowaniec and Valerie Oberleithner reflect on the topic of online addiction, while dancer Mirjam Sögner deals with physicality in digital realms, electromagnetic fields and signals. Furthermore, the Hungry Sharks company will show a solo by hip-hop dancer Farah Deen that poses questions on norms, religion and femininity and Sara Lanner reflects virtualised, queer and post-humanist physicalities. Furthermore, artist Eva-Maria Schaller will open the archives of dance history and transport Leonid Yakobson’s historic dance peace Vestris into the Here and Now.
In addition, imagetanz will present two international performances, both as premieres within in the German-speaking area. Opening the festival, the acclaimed British performance duo Lone Twin will interpret a mighty playlist with choreographies by artistic cronies including Richard Maxwell, Tim Etchells (Forced Entertainment), Gob Squad, Ivana Müller, Jonathan Burrows and many more. Finally, Norwegian choreographer Ludvig Daae will conclude the festival with three dancers in his glamourously eccentric dance performance Dance To Dance To, in which he combines futuristic coolness with electronic beats.
Even during imagetanz, the brut Specials will continue to create room for encounters, dialogue and mutual inspiration. Within three issues of Handle with Care Zoë Schreckenberg & Chris Ludwig, Hugo Le Brigand and Veza Fernández will open their rehearsal studios for visits and allow sneak peeks into their new pieces. In addition, each of the imagetanz artists Hungry Sharks, Sara Lanner and Eva-Maria Schaller will invite audiences to dance with them on one of the festival Saturdays while Florentina Holzinger will host a martial arts session for everyone except men. This issue’s salon night will gather artists from the Vienna scene for a discussion, while celebration is called for at the festival instalment of the brut regular’s table, several parties and a social dance with the Nesterval ensemble.
