In October, the Nibelungenviertel, a part of Vienna’s 15th district, will host a participatory television series that will fuse motifs of Wagner’s Ring into an epic four-part TV show – live. Involving the people present on location, the performance/TV collective irreality.tv will turn opera into soap opera and Café Kriemhild into a kind of neighbourhood Valhalla. Anybody can participate. Following several performances and interventions in the public, the series will premiere at brut on January 19th.
For DER RING DES NIBELUNGENVIERTELS, irreality.tv uses the strategy of soapification, where life is designed in a manner so unexpected and exciting as it is otherwise only known from television. Motifs and issues from Wagner’s Ring form the repertoire on which participants may draw. What, for example, would one do if they had a magic hood at their disposal? The project aims at nothing less than becoming a new Nibelungensaga, a Nibelung series about the desires and adventures in Vienna’s 15th district. Anybody can take part, be it just for one scene or in a major role. Those interested can reach out to the irreality.tv production office right at the film set on Kriemhildplatz starting in early October or send an e-mail to info@irreality.tv.
irreality.tv emerged from a collaboration of the performance groups random people (Hamburg) and red park (Frankfurt/Vienna). Most recently, they created the production Ebensee Rising at the 2015 Festival der Regionen in Upper Austria.
