Workshop Countering Criminalisation of Migration – Solidarity Practices and Resistance at borders and courts

“There is no LEGAL way to reach Europe. If you have no visa, you have to risk your life to go to Europe. The authorities are making it every time more difficult and more dangerous to cross the border. That’s why it is impossible to enter Europe without the help of people whom you call ‘smugglers’. Even the ways with the smugglers are risky. But it is necessary that someone helps you.” (Refugee Protest Camp Vienna, 2014)
It's been 10 years since the surveillance, accusations and imprisonments around the so-called Fluchthilfeprozess in Wiener Neustadt against eight refugees – most of them being activists in the Refugee Protest Camp Vienna. Throughout Austria and mostly outside of public perception, proceedings against persons charged with “Schlepperei” (human smuggling) under §114 FPG take place almost daily.
Across Europe, the number of people supporting migrant mobility and being monitored, criminalized, and convicted as so-called smugglers is also steadily increasing, as entry and transit options have become largely illegalized and increasingly difficult without support structures.
The workshop aims to create collective exchange on solidary practices with and among migrant and refugee communities in their struggles for freedom of movement.

Prozess.report is an Austria-based association for trial observation. Prozess.report was founded in 2014 in solidarity with the defendants of the refugee aid trial and since then has been reporting critically on court proceedings in Austria. The collective works on the following topics, among others: Criminalization of migration and protests, racism and right-wing extremism in court, police violence.

Fluchthilfe & Du? is an activist plattform working on unmaking the official human smuggling narrative. Both were founded in solidarity with and support of criminalised refugee activists of the Refugee Protest Camp Vienna in 2013.
