2 become 1 is a first-time collaboration between the international performance scene’s equally feared and celebrated enfant terrible Ann Liv Young and Marino Formenti, who has been called the “Glenn Gould of the 21st century”. The two artists, though coming from very different realms, have two things in common: They are both known to radically question their respective lines of work and they both seek a very intimate relationship with their audiences. In the work they devise for brut, they will again get very close to their audience as they will use a vacant premise in Vienna as a temporary laboratory to meet one person at a time.
Internationally acclaimed New York performance artist Ann Liv Young is known for her radical actionist art and her flamboyant performance trash universe. Wherever she goes, she enchants audiences with her unpredictable multiple personalities she borrows from fairy-tales, dramas or history. Ann Liv Young loves to clutter her audience with therapeutic advice and analysis.
Marino Formenti, who fills the most prestigious concert halls from Vienna to New York, also continues to undermine the hierarchic situation between an artist and his audience. By creating intimate spaces of encounter, he frees his audience from its passive role and its anonymity. For example, he has played marathon concerts continuing for several weeks and one-on-one concerts for only a single person each.
In 2 become 1, the two artists meet their visitors eye to eye. In parallel with the project, they keep a video journal that allows insights into their current work in the way of a virtual shop window. Their work in progress will be concluded by an evening entitled REVUE on December 12th, emerging as the final result of all previous individual encounters and presenting the duo Formenti/Young plus guests on stage for the first time.
