LAUNDRETTE - ENTROPY

in co-operation with composer Jorge Sánchez-Chiong

brut at Waschsalon at Matteottihof
Performance / Installation Micro-performative installation in German and English
{Information Overflow} {Sound-Art-Performance} {brain washing system}

Director Thomas J. Jelinek and composer Jorge Sánchez-Chiong will join up with a number of other artists and scientists to hold a public brain wash at the laundrette of the 5th district social housing complex Matteottihof. The audience will get the chance to explore various settings and equipment ranging from a brain scanner to eye-tracking glasses accentuated by a electronic live music set by composer Jorge Sánchez-Chiong, turning the laundrette into a communal self-cleaning service. What might sound like dystopian science-fiction will soon grow into an analysis of present-day politics, communication processes and our perception of them as well as their cognitive impact.

Thomas Jelinek, LAUNDRETTE - ENTROPY

For about an hour, visitors will gather in small groups to plunge into a unique wash, exploring a series of micro-performative media and music installations. Piece by piece, the individual elements will assemble to form a cumulative space of clinical self-analysis. An audio-visual resonance chamber of present-day world perception staged by Jelinek and composed by Sánchez-Chiong will then come alive to be grasped both physically and psychologically as music, sounds, technical trial procedures and voices from exploratory processes of the human species overlap.

Kunst-LABor, a collaborative art laboratory for the exploration of the concept of entropy in the present, places special focus on political processes of media manipulation and everyday life as a factor of informational entropy. Laundrette – Entropy is one stop in a large-scale project revolving around entropy that has been presented at Ars Electronica, Transmediale Berlin, Musiktheatertage Wien and several other places.

Thomas J. Jelinek is a director and transdisciplinary conceptual artist, dramaturge and curator. In his projects, he works on the production of lab-type spaces for discourse and spatial installations. He is the artistic director and founder of NOMAD-theatre, LABfactory and co-founder of MESSING-network and Liquid Loft. Jelinek has been honoured with numerous awards, including the Kunststückepreis awarded by Austrian Television and, as part of Liquid Loft, the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale.

 Jorge Sánchez-Chiong is a freelance composer and turntablist who works in Vienna. He studied musical composition and jazz theory at the Vienna Music University. Today, Sánchez-Chiong collaborates with improvisers, performers, video artists and directors. His compositions have been performed in Europe, the United States, Asia and Australia.

Visitors enter the installation in small groups. A visit runs 60 minutes minimum. Please book your ticket for an admission time at 8 pm, 8.30 pm, 9 pm or 9.30 pm. As the number of tickets is limited per time slot, we recommend to buy the ticket in advance in the brut online shop.
