For Airpnp, Barbara Ungepflegt and Peter Ahorner move into an annex to the stop of bus number 5B on Wallensteinplatz. The audience is free to visit day and night and watch the two of them dwell for two weeks. Airpnp turns the prosaic non-place and transit area that is the bus stop into a space for opportunities, in which alternative forms of habitation are tried out. In the midst of the city’s hustle and bustle, Airpnp allows public sleeping and makes our every-day frustration with living visible.
Cocooning is so yesterday. Today, we leave our own homes to solvent strangers, throwing intimacy – that is the intimacy of habitation – on the market. We have stopped living and started un-living. The concept of the sharing economy as embodied by Airbnb does not discuss mistrust. The world is our home, and: “Trust is what makes it work”, as the Airbnb website reads.
In Air pause and peep (Airpnp),hosts Barbara Ungepflegt and Peter Ahorner share unique experiences with their guests (who are also passengers). Airpnp is based on a huge level of trust to make sure the hosts are fine. And that the guests feel at home in the public space. The basis of that trust is a proven system of observation: The host observes his or her guests. And vice versa. The Airpnp community can only work when it creates honest encounters that help decide about insights on a well-informed basis. Be at home everywhere.
From September 14th to 28th, 2017, Barbara Ungepflegt and Peter Ahorner move into an annex to the stop of bus number 5B, where people can see how they dwell.
The city is all yours. Until the next bus stops. Then, it might be mine.
Airpnp will be documented in the form of a publication. A semi-documentarian feature film about Airpnp is scheduled to be presented in February 2018.
