As part of the brut series Handle with care, performer Danilo Andrés invites the audience to attend a rehearsal for the new project PNEUMA. The Handle with care format regularly opens up rehearsal processes at brut and creates space for dialog and exchange. Artists try out parts of their work in front of a small audience, receive feedback and turn the visitors into accomplices.
In PNEUMA, dance and guttural voice come together to create an expansive, concertante and at the same time installative work. Danilo Andrés investigates the world of the supernatural and spirit possessions. By using extreme vocal practices, such as growling, guttural voice, lamentations, screams, and whispers, the choreographer creates incantations that aim to open portals and thresholds to the spiritual world. The research involves developing new dances and ritual actions designed to communicate with spiritual forces. In this framework, bodily possession practices under the influence of supernatural energies, spirits, and demons will be examined. The choreographer and vocalist associate the guttural voice with the primal, the spiritual, and the supernatural and they recognise here a context to be explored by the choreographic and visual art as well. In many cultures, this type of vocalisation is believed to allow the person to connect with energies that are beyond the human, linking the singer with the divine, the ancestral, or the unknown. The raspy, deep sound of the guttural voice can evoke strength and mystery and is valued for awakening human emotions on an instinctive level.
