Performance World premiere in English

kneading to the 3rd millennia is a working process on acts and atmospheres that motivate us in this moment in time. It is also a search for what we are able to do and available for. What do we as humans need, and what does the third millennia need from us?

Lau Lukkarila – kneading to the 3rd millennia

The joint working process of Lau Lukkarila and artists Charlie Laban Trier, tiran, Ju Aichinger and Manuel Riegler starts with the connection between the English words ‘needing’ and ‘kneading’. ‘Kneading’ is what kittens do to pump milk from their nursing cat's breast. Later in life, most cats maintain this pattern of behaviour, maybe to mark their emotional territory. The performance kneading to the 3rd millennia is made up of found bits and pieces, band practice, grunge, neediness, out-of-order dances, and density of neural firing. It takes a long time to get to know someone, and even then, they keep on changing.

Lau Lukkarila is a choreographer and performer currently based in Vienna. Lau studied applied theatre, acting, and performance at the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki and the Royal School of Performing Arts in Madrid. In 2018, they received both the Austrian Federal Chancellor’s Office’s START scholarship and the danceWEB scholarship associated with the ImPulsTanz festival. Recent works include Trouble (2019, Tanzquartier Wien) and the online EPs Super Like (2019) and HUFKLANG (2020), published under the pseudonym LAUX (Schoßhund). Their most recent piece NYXXX was co-produced by imagetanz/brut Wien in 2020 and invited to the 2021 ImPulsTanz festival.

Pressestimmen

"Energy and emotionality, body control and muscle play as well as graceful and rough movements of the arms and legs actually make her appear as a god like entity – dangerous, seductive and irresistible." (tanzschrift.at)

"What are the things that I already think of everyday, that I’m already doing or noticing. What are the books that I’m reading, what the movies I am seeing, what’s the music that I’m choosing, what has an impact, what feels magnetic to me? Also, what bothers me?" (Lau Lukkarila in an interview with PW-Magazine)

"I am curious about the embodiment of knowledge and the sensorial aspects of creating. I think there‘s a certain potentiality in participating in someone else‘s embodied processes as a spectator, which can catalyze new life and new ideas. It‘s like a driving force, not necessarily always directed towards a future, but heading in all kinds of different directions." (Lau Lukkarila in an interview with gift – Zeitschrift für freies Theater)

Music that is played, covered or sampled in the performance:
  • GRLwood ‚I Need to Get off My Phone‘
  • GRLwood ‚My Boyfriend Is My Girlfriend‘
  • Sade ‚The Sweetest Taboo‘
  • tiran ‘out in the corner’
  • Céline Dion ‚When I Need You‘
  • Depeche Mode ‚Enjoy the Silence‘
  • Ann Hampton Callaway ‚The Nanny‘
