{gender & race} {body & psyche} {desire & seduction}

In Around L-INKED , Jaskaran Anand draws inspiration from the Indian mythological figure of Shiva Shakti, a character combining male and female energies in a single body. Jaskaran Anand challenges the duality of body and psyche, showing us the limits of our thinking in opposites and stereotypes. This sensual piece celebrates the uniqueness of every single human being as it unleashes our craving and calls on us to abandon restrictions, shame and self-hatred.

Jaskaran Anand – Around L-INKED

How do we define, stereotype and practice the idea of relationships between humans? How can we unravel the sensitivity and sensibility of forming relationships through the intersections of different cultural and socio-poltical ideas of gendered and sexualised bodies? How can such pre-occupations amongst people, especially those of a patriarchal nature, trigger restrictions in expressions of physical intimacy and body shaming? Where do popular culture and the current culture of social media come in? Where does fear play a role?

Around L-INKED grabs the essence of the project L-INKED, which is set between fictional and real scenarios derived on the spirit of the performance L-INKED/Bitch, a perception (previously entitled L-INKED). It explores the notion of the “Shakti” (energy) that occurs when humans’ bodies interact with each other and discusses the concept that “desire has no form”, unravelling the diversified singularity of a gendered human body by exploring the bodily desires between learned seductions and moments of trance.

The performance L-INKED/Bitch, a perception (previously entitled L-INKED) started as a text-based solo improvisation performance influenced by personal, socio-political and cultural experiences around the topic of physical intimacy and its relationship with the Indian mythological figure of Shiva Shakti/Adi Shakti, also known as referred to as Ardhanarishvara, who combines the feminine and the masculine in a single body. Together, the energies are in balance and harmony: labelled/unlabelled, boxed/not boxed, white/black, male/female, good/bad.
During imagetanz, brut presents a Work-in-Progress-Showing and an artist talk. The premiere of the project is planned in autumn 2021.

Jaskaran Anand was born in New Delhi, India and has been living in Linz since 2015. He is a performer, choreographer, researcher and educator. Fascinated by spirituality as well as the psychological and neuroscientific understandings of the self, his research and his interdisciplinary work focus on (de)constructing the concept of reality while investigating the socio-political dimension surrounding it. Jaskaran Anand’s pieces have been presented in Austria, New Zealand and India.

Pressestimmen

"Because the artist manages to give the topic of sexual identity and gender fluidity, including the associated dance discourse, its very own, non-Western spin. As a result, the American-style gender game aesthetic, which has recently become more of a stereotypical mandatory ritual, is gaining a fresh successor." (Helmut Ploebst, Der Standard)
