brut’s Handle with Care series regularly opens rehearsal processes, creating space for discussion and an exchange of views. Artists try out parts of their work in front of a small audience, receive feedback and transform the visitors into accomplices.

The 2021 imagetanz festival presents a special instalment of that series entitled Handle with Care Selected by BEATE. BEATE (brut’s Engaged Audience as Theatre Experts) is brut’s audience club, in which committed brut visitors are given intense insights into artistic and organisational processes and thereby turn into a group of experts who are able to add new perspective to brut’s diverse programme. From the start of the season, they visited  showings, published an open call and decided – in a multi-staged voting procedure – to invite artists Sara-Lisa Bals and Klemens Hegen to Handle with Care Selected by BEATE. During a one-week residency at the imagetanz festival, both artists will open their rehearsal processes for studio visits.

Sara-Lisa Bals – CUMERNUS DAY

in German

A holiday that never existed is brought back to life. It celebrates the self-empowerment of a woman who grew a beard overnight. Offerings are made, blackpudding is eaten. In Handle with Care Selected by BEATE, Sara-Lisa Bals shows us how she devises this fictional holiday to sensually overcome gender inequality and repression.

“Hier beghint die legende van die reyne maghet sinte ontcommer.”

(This is where the legend of the chaste virgin Saint Cumernus begins.)

Embedded in processions, rituals and offerings, Sara-Lisa Bals, together with the B and the Cumernus virgins, celebrates this highest of holidays, CUMERNUS DAY, in honour of a woman who with willpower and magic defends her right to her own sexuality and her own free will.

Sara-Lisa Bals, born in Vorarlberg in 1993, is an interdisciplinary artist in the fields of theatre, space art, and media. An alumna of the University of Applied Art Vienna’s Stage and Film Design as well as Transmedia Art classes, she currently lives and works in Vienna.

Klemens Hegen – poetry of failure

in German

There is no life without failure and yet we prefer to tell ourselves and others success stories. Failures find their legitimate place as necessary intermediate steps at best. poetry of failure is an attempt to undertake a paradigm shift – a search for beauty in failure. In an interdisciplinary research project, Klemens Hegen looks for ways to represent failure as he and his team work on a new culture of falling short.

Together they plunge into a training for the impossible: learning grand-jeté. This split jump in classical ballet can only be mastered as a result of years of exercise. An absurd endeavour? Maybe. But what happens when we exercise the impossible, thus granting the useless, the futile, even the counterproductive the space it deserves?

In his work, which is based on academic texts, Klemens Hegen processes different fields of research. poetry of failure is his first collaboration with set designer Larissa Kramarek and dramaturge Theresa Kraus. Earlier collaborations with costume designer Josefin Kwon included Platonov at Schauspiel Stuttgart and the theatre installation Jetzt Immer. The two of them are united by a curiosity for staged spaces of experience that conceptually enhance the text material and their shared interest for projects on the threshold between drama and visual (performance) art.

You can be BEATE, too!

Come join BEATE, the audience club at brut. BEATE is short for BRUT’S ENGAGED AUDIENCE as THEATRE EXPERTS – might sound complicated, but is actually pretty simple: BEATE joins rehearsals and creation processes of projects, opens a dialogue with artists and takes part in brut’s season programming.
