Economies of Action

LOAN, LAW, LOVE

brut
Performance / Music Austrian premiere (LAW & LOVE) in German
{trilogy} {composition meets film} {experimental social analysis}

First comes the money, then the law and lastly – LOVE. The composer Hannes Seidl and the film and video artist Daniel Kötter have been working on their trilogy called Economies of Action since 2013. They bring elements from documentary film and contemporary music together on stage to examine the immaterial conditions of social action in a surprisingly theatre-appropriate manner. In co-operation with the Wien Modern festival, brut shows the complete trilogy of this experimental performance series for the first time.

In the first episode, LOAN, Kötter and Seidl analyse the economy of action with regard to the financial system as symbolised by the profession of bankers. Part two, LAW, deals with the question of how spatial arrangements and borders affect the legal system. The trilogy is then concluded by the work LOVE created in co-production with brut and having its Austrian premiere here. LOVE centres not around romantic couples but love in terms of a social cohesive force that can be produced neither through economic relationships nor through binding legislation. Using film footage, live composition and experimental instruments, the three parts develop both individually and in connection with an overarching musical-theatrical composition.

Daniel Kötter and Hannes Seidl have worked on various artistic formats together since 2008, including experimental films, installations, performances and exhibitions. Their focus, however, is on feature-length pieces of musical theatre. Supported by Fonds Experimentelles Musiktheater, they both currently work on the musical theatre series ingolf at Musiktheater im Revier, Gelsenkirchen.

Pressestimmen

“The aesthetic experimental designs of Seidl/Kötter seek nothing less than the big questions and the impervious links between things a late-capitalist, globalised presence has to offer. That is quite a lot, often sounding rather presumptuous when reading the related theory, but ultimately turns out to be intriguingly ambivalent, playful and even hilarious at times.” Neue Musik Zeitung

“Despite its very lucid structure, the piece is full of surprises and, almost silently, exudes emotional force, almost epic, not unlike the blueprint of a saga. Love, hiding inside the poetic image, defrosts hearts while dying from freezing itself. Beautifully done.” Frankfurter Neue Presse on LOVE
