Home Visit Europe by Helgard Haug, Stefan Kaegi and Daniel Wetzelis a performance you can put in your carry-on luggage and present in any apartment. A show, a game presented more intimately than big ideas usually are. What is Europe actually? Is it a geographic border, a cultural identity, a coalition of states? It is said over and over that Europe is an ever changing idea – too theoretical for the individual to be told from their own experience. Rimini Protokoll contrasts this abstract idea of Europe with the individuality of a private apartment. 15 people become part of a social parlour game in a living room that interweaves personal stories and the political mechanisms of Europe. How much Europe do we all have in us? What at first feels like a political meeting soon takes a different turn as maps are spread out, problems discussed and joint decisions made. For the duration of a show, Europe is made tangible as a social space.
Each performance takes place in a different home, so the performance will travel through hundreds of apartments throughout Europe, building a network that rather than growing from a centre, stretches from front door to front door across a continent. Anybody can invite Home Visit Europe to their own home or visit a stranger’s residence as a guest.
Rimini Protokoll is one of the most renowned independent theatre companies in the German-speaking world, constantly busy expanding the possibilities of theatre since 2000 to allow extraordinary perspectives on our reality. In 2011, their oeuvre was awarded the Silver Lion in Venice. Rimini Protokoll’s most recent performance at brut was Remote Vienna, an audio-tour across the city for a crowd of 50 audience members with headphones.
“A psychologically interesting and most of all highly amusing parlour game.” Deutschlandradio Kultur
"Home Visit Europe, which tours through ten European countries since the year before and stays at more than 500 private flats, demands clear decisions from the guests. Everyone is adressed personally and has to check his or her position. Here lies the strength of the evening. And if you look closer, you soon discover differences and that other people would draw other borders than you would." Der Standard
