The Bolaño Project takes on the challenge of familiarising an audience with a great piece of literature. Chilean writer Roberto Bolaño worked on the novel 2666 until he died. For him, it was not only his magnum opus but a way of leaving capital to his descendants. The book was published posthumously, translated into numerous languages and became a world bestseller.
The Bolaño Project – An Introduction is a performance-style introduction into the universe of Roberto Bolaño, an approximation of this novel of the century and an idea how it might be possible to bring the extensive work to the stage: by dissecting it into its five original pieces, by having it interpreted by five artists from five different disciplines. For the opening night, Laia Fabre and Thomas Kasebacher have chosen an element to be found in all parts of the book: fauna. The whole book is populated by countless four-legged friends as metaphors, insults, pet names or simply as what they are. The animals are also a metaphor for the big issues that Bolaño tackles in his novel and that make it so timeless: violence, sex and the friction between reality and fiction.
The collaboration between Laia Fabre and Thomas Kasebacher under the name notfoundyet began in 2007. It has since produced nine performances, the starting material for which the two of them usually find in every-day events and routines, trying to distil certain topics of relevance from them. In doing so, notfoundyet often collaborate with other visual artists, musicians, dancers and performers. These co-operations then birth projects in process-oriented development periods. Based on an initial idea, improvisation, text work, choreographic elements and music are put together in intense working phases to bring about new pieces and new forms of expression.
