{Dark Schlager} {Guilty pleasure} {Dance theatre}

Three performers trying to escape their daily routine end up in the world of Schlager music: Are feelings actually classified like in Andrea Berg’s ‘Gefühle haben Schweigepflicht’? Don’t we dream after the age of 17 as Peggy March suggested? And is Jürgen Marcus correct in claiming that a new love is like a new life? MATHIEU looks behind the scenes, not just of Paris (cf. Mireille Mathieu), but of the guilty pleasure as such. And how does the performance do that? By creating an entirely new genre of show: Dark Schlager. Crooning meets dance theatre!

Sebastiano Sing – MATHIEU

Guilty pleasures are songs, films, and TV shows that are generally not considered particularly high-value, especially by the arts pages. The performance MATHIEU grabs the swimming trunks (cf. Cornelia Froboess) and dives into the reputedly shallow waters of musical entertainment. The audience is welcomed with an emotional roller coaster of stereotypes and biases between cosily pleasant drifts, glitzy colours, serious contaminants, and gaping rifts in the deeper areas of the cold-water pool that is classism. As Joy Fleming has wisely remarked, ‘Ein Lied kann eine Brücke sein’, a song may well be a bridge.

Sebastiano Sing is a performer and choreographer. His works have been shown in London, Lisbon, Belgrade, Stuttgart, Munich, Venice, and Vienna since 2014. He performed at the Biennale Teatro as well as at the 56th Biennale Arte in Venice, at Wien Modern, the steirischer herbst and the Wiener Festwochen. He worked with the likes of Miloš Lolić, Gisèle Vienne, Dora García, and Christopher Rüping. In 2020, he received the START scholarship for the performing arts from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Civil Service and Sport, followed by the renowned 2021 ImPulsTanz danceWeb scholarship. Also with ImPulsTanz, Sing completed a research residency for the current piece MATHIEU in 2022.

Hugo Le Brigand works with dances as means of movement and collaborates with artists such as Doris Uhlich, Alix Eynaudi, Sebastiano Sing, and Daniela Georgieva. In 2018, he received the START scholarship for music and performing arts after participating in ImPulsTanz’s danceWEB in 2017. Le Brigand studied at the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance, the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds, and the Rennes 2 University.

ERNST LIMA (*aquarius) is a media artist, producer, and sound designer who in their music combines synthetic and multi-instrumental sounds with arranged guitar sounds. EL’s music is fluid and defies genre attributions. They merge influences from experimental electronic music, electro-acoustics, and film scores with the rough guitar loops that are often the starting point for their song-writing process.
