Withdrawing completely from a world designed entirely around growth and productivity: In WUMAN ON A SOFA, the newly established FRANZ Pop Collective examines self-imposed isolation as an example of resistance. The performance, both a pop concert and queer-feminist reflection on being alone, centres around a number of original songs composed specifically for the event.
WUMAN ON A SOFA is the debut production by the FRANZ Pop Collective, consisting of actor Julia Franz Richter, musician Clemens Wenger, and director Felix Hafner, whose intent is to notch the demarcation lines of musical theatre. In an intimate setting, the collective’s songs merge with choreographic elements while videos showing the outside world are juxtaposed with the treadmill of isolation and main performer Julia Franz Richter switches between all the different performative levels. This prompts a couple of questions on the analogue versus the digital self, resignation versus optimism. Phases of boredom are followed by playfully self-oblivious moments in which solitude is reflected from a queer-feminist perspective. What kinds of images do we associate with people who have withdrawn from society? Is it a privilege for the happily unhappy few or necessary recovery for our irritable minds and an exploited planet? The premiere of the FRANZ Pop Collective’s WUMAN ON A SOFA coincides with the release of their eponymous EP record (Las Vegas Records).
FRANZ Pop Collective is an interdisciplinary artist collective working on pop music in various narrative formats. The collective’s permanent members include actor Julia Franz Richter, musician Clemens Wenger, and director Felix Hafner. In collaboration with video artists, set designers and choreographers, FRANZ Pop Collective is continuously growing while devising on-stage implementations of their songs in enhanced, performative contexts. The music of the FRANZ Pop Collective is published with the Vienna-based label Las Vegas Records.
