In 2007, Rio de Janeiro-born choreographer Alice Ripoll founded her own company, the Cia REC. To date, she has created five productions, including aCORdo, which made a lasting impression at the Wiener Festwochen in 2019. The company comprised of dancers who grew up in Rio’s favelas is now a firm fixture on Brazil’s dance scene.

INFO: From May 14th 2021, 10am, you have the possibility of buying your tickets in the Wiener Festwochen webshop, by phone with a credit card or at our Box Office in the foyer of Halle E+G at MuseumsQuartier.

For her new piece Lavagem (Washing), Ripoll lends a poetic twist to the act of cleaning, immersing the performance space in water, soap, and foam: synonyms for hygiene on the one hand, and for transformation on the other. As the bodies become slippery, lose their grip, or are unable to cling to one another, they refuse exploitative capitalist relationships and racist attributions. New opportunities arise: a sense of sliding, floating and gliding that unsettles the relationship between beholder and beheld. Who or what has to be cleaned up? And why?

What is it like to create an international theater festival during a global pandemic?
