As part of brut’s Handle with care series, Mirjam Sögner grants sneak peeks into the devising process of her latest project. In SPEAKING VOLUMES, the Austrian choreographer describes geological transformation processes and changing landscapes and questions the role of humans in this dynamic constellation. Mountainous formations made of foam, stones and plastic foil encounter three performers, allowing the non-human to raise its voice. Mirjam Sögner experiments with poetic narratives of Earth time, self-mapping and the unstoppable advancement of drilling machines.

The surface of the Earth has been subject to constant change ever since it came into existence. Resource mining, urban sprawl and agriculture have accelerated the remodelling of the planet’s strata to the point that a person can even feel them during their lifespan. How can we imagine a world at the beginning of geology’s timeline? How can we comprehend the transformation processes that, in millions of years, compressed limestone, built up the Alps or shifted continental plates?

In SPEAKING VOLUMES, foam, stones, plastic foils and three performers meet in their different times and spaces. Together they ask how Earth strata can be given a voice in theatrical spaces and what roles humans play in this constellation of evanescence, malleability and tenacity.

The Handle with Care series grants sneak peeks into processes of artistic creation, experimenting with new formats and creating spaces for talking and exchanging views. Artists get the chance to try out parts of their work in front of a small audience, to receive feedback and to turn spectators into accomplices. SPEAKING VOLUMES will be presented at brut during the 2019/20 season.
