In the cold and damp months of January and February, performance artist Oleg Soulimenko will invite audiences to join him for an atmospheric trip into the warm parallel world of Jörgerbad. In the eerily empty, quiet bath, the audience will roam through a landscape of performance and water. An installation spanning the entire bath will push the limits of perception, grabbing visitors with a very special allure.
When the Jörgerbad bathhouse in Vienna’s 17th district was opened in 1914, it was Vienna’s first city-run bath. In the evenings, the abandoned two-story swimming hall with its galleries resembles a temple with a quiet, reflecting water surface at its base. Oleg Soulimenko’s performance uses and enhances this atmosphere and the quiet presence of the water to create a feeling of endlessness. Swimming Pool assesses the potentials of transformation – of space, water, performers, objects, sounds and transparency – shuttling between the poles of sensuality and abstraction. The performance plays with the removal of objects and the space from their every-day operative contexts, exposing the audience to the conflicting feelings of safety and uncanniness.
Russian choreographer/performance artist Oleg Soulimenko lives and works in Vienna. In 1990, he founded Saira Blanche Theatre and toured the world with the company’s provocative performances. His pieces have been shown, among others, at brut, Wiener Festwochen, ImPulsTanz, Impulse theatre festival and Kaaitheater in Brussels.
