The new chapter in the history of brut began in the summer of 2020 when brut's production manager, Annika Strassmair, received the information through the intermediary of Kreative Räume Wien that a hall on Nordwestbahnstraße could be of interest for brut. At that time, brut was constantly on the lookout for possible venues, both for individual projects and for longer-term uses. The hall in the 20th district, built by the Schöps company as a production facility for underwear, T-shirts, trousers and work coats and most recently used by the DelFabro beverage trade, immediately sounded promising. The surrounding northwest station area is owned by ÖBB, and a new city district will be created here from 2024.
Initially, the hall was discussed as a possible location for individual productions of the brut program; the rental period was offered for a maximum of one year. During a first inspection in August 2020, the technical director of brut, Michael Raab, and Annika Strassmair discovered very quickly that the hall could have what it takes to be a long-term quarter for brut. The large hall area not only offered enough space for a tribune, audience area and stage, but also sufficient storage space and, in the adjoining office section, space for all employees. "We then sat down in the Café am Tabor and in half an hour sketched a possible venue with a stage, warehouse and offices and realized: brut could stay here permanently," remembers Michael Raab.
Almost at the same time, brut received the approval for a new, permanent, own venue in St. Marx, which will be ready for occupancy at the end of 2023 after a general renovation by the City of Vienna. This made the site on Nordwestbahnstrasse the perfect intermediate home for brut. Negotiations were immediately started and brut's artistic director Kira Kirsch and managing director Richard Schweitzer were able to conclude a multi-year lease. "And suddenly a knot burst, the search for a venue of the last three years was over and instead we have now a huge hall at our disposal," says Annika Strassmair about the happy development of how brut came to Nordwestbahnstrasse.
