{Robots} {A.I.} {Humans & machines}

Digital machines measure us humans to generate data with which they can train artificial intelligence. But at the same time, A.I. trains us, too – with every click, like, or selfie. H.A.U.S. is a trans-disciplinary research group that, in their new performance, examines the prevalent obsession with conformity between humans and machines. At the intersection of technology, spoken word, and contemporary dance, youAI tackles the most recently evolving relationship between the two worlds: training.

H.A.U.S. – youAI

The credo of social flexibility demands continuous adjustment, increasing efficiency, and uniformity, all of which in turn calls for training. This entails, to start with, actively adjusting human bodies and mindsets, i.e. internalising, conditioning, and becoming proficient. As far as artificial intelligence is concerned, training also means to form, detect, and predict patterns. Such forms of training will result in arbitrary norms and practiced biases of all kinds. The omnipresent employment of artificial intelligence not only reproduces, but enhances those instances of discrimination. And if it doesn’t fit, a bigger hammer is used. youAI addresses the much-ignored material aspects of artificial intelligence as well as its restrictions using bodies and movements. The piece explores possibilities for a different A.I. and experiments with training processes at the intersection of technology, spoken word, and dance.

H.A.U.S. (Humanoids in Architecture and Urban Spaces) is a trans-disciplinary group uniting researchers from the fields of architecture, automation engineering, human–robot interaction, computer science, artificial intelligence, media art, music, dance, performance, and philosophy to do both scientific and artistic research as well as devise performances with audience care.

Eva-Maria Kraft is a dancer, dance educator, and choreographer for humans and robots. She manages the studio RAUM für TANZ in Vienna and teaches amateurs, trainers, and professionals on an international level. Her artistic projects move at the intersection of various art genres and sciences, explore (artificial) bodies, and are based on the real-time composition of movement. As part of the trans-disciplinary research group H.A.U.S., she is concerned with artificial intelligence and choreographs as well as performs with humanoid robots.

Oliver Schürer is a researcher, curator, editor, and author as well as senior scientist at, and deputy head of, the Vienna University of Technology’s Research Unit of Architectural Theory and Philosophy of Technics. He has executed a number of inter- and trans-disciplinary research projects, curates and produces conferences, symposiums, event series, and exhibitions. Schüler speaks and publishes internationally about architecture, technology, and the media. Since 2009, he has been developing technics theory based on techno-aesthetic experiments. In 2014, he founded the trans-disciplinary research group H.A.U.S. (Humanoids in Architecture and Urban Spaces) that conducts research into social robotics and social artificial intelligence in living environments.

Christoph Hubatschke is a philosopher and political scientist, who teaches at various universities in Vienna and Klagenfurt and co-founded the research group H.A.U.S. (Humanoids in Architecture and Urban Spaces). His interests lie at the intersection of political theory and critical philosophy of technics, in particular with regard to social movements and new technologies.
