The Handle with Care format invites audiences and colleagues to see initial sketches and talks, opens rehearsal processes and creates room for dialogue and exchange. Artists try out parts of their works in front of a limited audience in order to receive feedback, turning the spectactors into accomplices. During this year’s imagetanz festival, there will be three editions of Handle with Care: On March 18th, Veza Fernández will show excerpts of the rehearsal process for her new project When Eye Becomes Mouth, whose world premiere will be held by brut this April.

Veza Fernández, Wenn Auge Mund wird

Veza Fernández’ work is a DIY type of dance theatre about the role of the dancer, her emancipatory power, the expression of her desires and the necessity of sticking together when hope is fading. When Eye Becomes Mouth attempts to create a new, feminist image of the ballerina, which recharges, encourages and extends the character of the dancer. It is supposed to become a celebration of collective diversity, not only regarding mise-en-scène and choreography, but also through the cast on stage, who are all dancers, performers and artists of Vienna’s queer dance and performance scene examining new, partially utopian possibilities of collective, choreographic existence for women, queer people or artists.

Choreographer/performer Veza Fernández works at the intersection of dance and theatre, composition and text creation. She studied English and Romance languages while acquiring her dance skills through professional dance trainings. She creates performances by herself, with Christina Lederhaas and with many other people who touch or overwhelm her. Her solo piece Calamocos won the BESToffSTYRIA Audience Award in 2014. In 2015, she received a danceWEB scholarship at the Vienna Dance Festival. Most recently, she showed The Father Care Piece Piece at brut and was responsible for the choreography in Nesterval’s Dirty Faust.
